This small neighborhood,
nestled between Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and the Flagler Memorial
Bridge, is named for the Spanish ship Providencia that ran aground
in 1878 in Palm Beach with 20,000 coconuts.
In 1919 lakefront lots along Flagler Drive sold for about $8,000
each and lots fronting Olive Avenue sold for about $3,000
each. The neighborhood had a feverish building pace in the early
'20's, ahead of the peak boom period.
The most dominant architectural styles are Mediterranean revival
and colonial revival, but you'll also see many ranch-style houses
that were built after World War II.
Excerpts from "Pioneers
in Paradise" by Jan Tuckwood and Eliot Kleinberg.
